Are there a lot of poor copies of this lens? The only reason I ask is that a lot of the examples which are sold on here are literally weeks old, and some have sold more than once. I've been looking for a replacement for my 17-85 and now that I have a Sigma 10-20mm and a Canon 70-300 IS, I would quite happily go for the likes of the 17-50, however it seems as if its pot luck to get a good sharp copy with no focussing issues.

I hope that that isn't the case as I'd hope people here are honest enough not to sell faulty / poor stuff to people on the forum :'(

I have one and it has no focus issues and it's sharp.

I'm in a similar situation, though I've just ordered a new vc version! But would I get better than this From my recently bought sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 dc macro !

Is a 100% crop of my son on a 450d, ISO100, f5.6, 1/200sec, using 580ex flash

Soz Rob, I'm only down the road from you in Normanby but even though I hardly use my Tamron (I normally use primes or a 12-24mm) I don't want to part with it.

Why not go to RGB in Middlesbrough and I'm sure they'd let you try before you buy.

Lee, I think that lots of lenses are good enough these days. Maybe the only extra you'd get with a Tamron 17-50mm over your 17-70mm is the constant f2.8? But you'd lose 20mm.
