Cheers for that. Am I right in thinking that one has the built in motor? Does anywhere sell the older lens without the built in motor from new?

Thanks for the above input. I just ordered the Non VC model from warehouse express, so should be here tomorrow. hopefully it will be a sharp copy..
 
One thing you should just watch out for is back/front focus issues - I read about quite a high number of these issues with these lenses.

I bought one second hand recently and made sure to check before I walked out with it.

I will check it out, that's why I ended up buying a new one, if I'm not happy I can return it.
 
I have ordered the tamron 17-50 NON VC from Jessops. I have seen the 17-50 VC is only £5 more expensive. Should I still just stick with the Non VC?
 
In my experience no. I'd stick with non-VC.
 
tried my non vc motorised version again (A16NII) & its still no good :thumbsdown:
i'd be hard pushed to even say i had one keeper from last weekend :shake:

i bought mine from Hong Kong via ebay & the seller said i can return it to their UK address & claim either a full refund or they will send me another lens to try BUT they also said this would be the last lens they would send me!
no more trys to find a good one!
not sure what to do now as its a lens of a type that i would like in my lineup but i don't want to be stuck with another copy thats as bad or possibly even worse :shrug:
 
i would get a refund and get one from a uk shop.

either you are getting a rubbish price on the non-vc or they have a ridiculously good price on the VC. If its the latter, get it and resell it!
 
i am in the same predicament with which lens to get. i already had a 17-50 VC edition which i was more than happy with but since my wife broke it im out for a replacement. Im unsure what to get to be honest.. im actually leaning towards a sigma 17-70 instead now!
 
It depends what you're planing to shot.
If your plan is to shot fast moving objects the image stabilizer will be good to have.
If you are planing to shot non moving objects, there is no point of getin VC unless there is really image quality difference.

I thought that VC/IS/VR only removed/helped with hand movements..... and was nothing to do with moving subjects?
 
I find it difficult to assess. You shutter speed seems very very high, resulting in a dark image with some noise. I wouldn't say it is bad, but better light, lower shutter speed would produce better results I would guess.

Here is one of mine, straight from camera not done any processing other than export RAW from Apple Aperture to Flickr.

Thanks, The D7000 came today so I have taken a few shots tonight and it seems a lot better.. Will try use it at the weekend and see what I think..
 
I bet you are excited :-) Quite a step up the D7000 and will show any sloppy technique, well it did for me at least moving up from my old D70.
 
The VC version in Jessops is £345 and the non VC is £339. I know some of the hong kong resellers are much less than this. Does this just mean Jessops is a rip off?
 
You can't compare a HK seller to a proper UK business. Some UK business are cheaper than Jessops and some are dearer. Some Jessops branches are reported to be absolutely pants with staff that doesn't know a thing, other branches are fantastic.

Considering I had two dud VC versions of that lens, I bought VC as it was only £5 more as well despite everywhere on the Internet people stating the non-VC is better. At least I was able to go into the MK branch, and able to try out different combinations of lens and body, but consistently the vc versions were wrong.

The advantage of buying it in a local shop, picking it up there and then, trying it out, having a good return policy etc has value to me as well. Whether it has to you, only you can answer.
 
What would be the best way for me to test the lens instore on my camera?? to see if theres issues with focusing

Aperture priority, single spot focus mode. Set the aperture wide open at f2.8 and shoot from an angle.

Here are some examples of a wrong lens for me that may help you identify.

Here I noticed something was not quite right. I focussed on my daughter the tall blond one, which was confirmed when checking the focal point. But the lens knew better ;)

So in the shop we did further tests. In this picture the focal point was on the white corner of the little partition. Yet the lens focusses on the Jessops letter/logo a bit behind it.

So I would pick a corner like that in the shop and try it out. Some was subtle and hard to see in camera so I brought my MBA as well to pop the SD Card in there to make certain. Although the above examples were obvious to see.

I got the non vc lens for £306 from warehouse express, vc model is £350

How do these (VC and non-VC) compare to the Canon 15-85mm? I'm thinking of selling my 15-85 in favour of a constant 2.8 lens, I'm not too worried about VC/IS but I don't want to change if the IQ or AF is much worse.

I wouldn't say they're a rip off, the HK resellers have lower overheads, plus they avoid VAT as the products are imports.

I'm looking at getting one of these and am tempted to buy from UK seller with a physical shop, just so I can return it easily if necessary.

just been ooking through my 17-50 shots & i dont like any of them
soft & underexposed a pleasing image does not make :shake:
well thats what Yoda once told me :lol:

i just need to choose between either sending it back for exchange (the seller told me this would be the only one offered so if the exchange lens is a dud as well then i'm screwed) or send back for refund & prob go buy a 35mm f/1.8 instead :shrug:

not sure what to do. i kinda want/need a 17-50 lens but i dont want to end up with another duff copy i can't send back :bang:
 
Send it back and buy another one in a shop, sure might cost a little bit more but if it gets the results you want and the service to try it out it would be worth it to me.
