Since downgrading all my lenses i could do with a better walkabout to leave on. I cant stretch to the Canon 17-55 at the moment. Have been looking at the Tamron 17-50 VC as its only slightly more expensive than the non-VC. Reviews are not exactly flooding it with praise but was wondering if anyone on here owns one and what they think of it.

Cheers

Have you thought about the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS

That gets excellent reviews and might be a happy medium for you

The non VC version is sharper and gets much better reviews, I've got one and its a cracking lens for the money, you certainly wont regret getting it.

Had one for a few months and was not happy with it. For a long while was my only lens with my 7d, but still knew something wasn't right. I got inconsistent results with focusing, and even with a MA of +7 on camera my pics were still oof. After sending back to Tamron it came back much better but still hated the ***** slow af and the really poor performance at F2/8 , so sold it and had to shell out for the 1755 (ouch), which has none of those issues. I will state I much preffered the build of the tamron though as felt much more solid and the VC was prob a tad better as being newer, but had that classic tamron jump before stabilising. I'd strongly suggest buying from somewhere like jessops where you can use for a month and return under their policy if your not happy!

I had the VC on Canon and found it to be really soft and slow on AF, i have heard the non VC is a much better option but not tried it myself.

Just had a look on CPB and the siggy 17-50 is £520 ish, looks good on paper but a wee bit out my price range at the moment. Sounds like all the reviews for the VC version are correct then. Shame they seem to have got it so wrong.

Do Jessops have a 28 day return policy then? Is that for instore or online only?

if i remember correctly, Jessops is a 30 day money back policy. Used it a few times now. I would rather pay a little more for something, if i know i can always return it if not completely satisfied, and have no problems getting a refund!

Thanks for all the replies, as good as the 17-50 non vc is i think the slowish AF would annoy me. Any views on the siggy 18-50 Ex or the Tokina 16-50?
