Hi my friends,

I've got my EOS 50D body...but the tamron 17-50 F2.8 (non-VC) is out of stock now...a friend recommended the sigma 17-70 F2.8-F4 HSM OS Macro.

Their prices are similar. The tamron has constant F2.8 while the sigma has longer focus and HSM&OS&MACRO.

So which one should I buy?

Thanks a lot!

Shawn.

I'm biased to the Tammy because I use one and it's a superb lens, especially as a used buy for less than £200. I'm sure the Siggy will be good but that 2.8-4 aperture change isn't as versatile, although it does have longer reach....

Thanks very much for your reply!

If it's for general photography, inlcuding landscapery, then you won't go far wrong with the Tammy. Some people will argue that you need wider - which is why a lot of folk use the Siggy 10-20mm, Nikon 12-24mm etc - but 17mm is still wide enough to get a wide vista in. It's a sharp lens throughout and corner sharpness is good too, even wide open, although at f/8 - f/16 it's superb (the apertures you'll be using for landscape work). The other good thing is that it's a 67mm front filter so will cost you less for a circular polariser than these super-wide lenses.

At the long end it's good. Again, that constant f/2.8 works well for portraiture and on a crop body you're getting an effective focal length of 75mm+, which is great for portraiture.

On my Nikon the AF is fast and fairly quiet. Some comments have been made that it's not as fast to focus as the Canon and Nikon 17-55s and not as quiet, but they're three times the prices (or so), which is something I can live with.

Not the best shot but it gives you an idea of it at 17mm:

This is it at 50mm (althogh it's not a great shot)...

i think the tammy would be better then due to the f2.8 aperture to create some niced effects for portraiture, 50mm is ok on aps-c but for me i would rather buy a 50mm f1.8 due to the wide aperture for portraits and then have the tammy for wide(ish) shots.

I love my Tamron on my 50D. If you have a search through the forums you'll see a lot of people raving about the non-vc version. :)

Great choice. Hope you enjoy using it. :)
