Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II VC For Canon now available in the UK.

I'll be waiting for some sample shots.... I'm really really tempted having owned the old version.

Here is the list of retailers from Intro 2020 who will have stock tomorrow.

Some will have sold their stock on pre-order.
Good luck and post back the prices you pay for them.

Oh, and for those waiting for Onestop digital to receive them, they still don't have any stock.

Top work hashcake, thank you :)

I spoke to Clifton just now, who checked with their stock department, and they said they should be receiving their consigment either tomorrow or Friday, and that, so far, they'd had no pre-orders. Well, now they have, coz I've just placed an order for mine £409.95 delivered. This includes a UK warranty, of course. Hope to have my grubby hands on it by this time next week at the latest.

I think that's a great price; seeing as OneStop have been selling the Nikon version at a shade under £370, I'm more than happy to pay the extra £40 for a UK warranty; being a brand new lens it's a bit of an unknown quantity, so I think the peace of mind is worth it ;)

I was on the phone to a lady at Clifton just after 5pm doing exactly the same  Order placed straight away

You probably spoke to the same very nice lady I did ;); I could barely contain my excitement when she said the lenses were turning up tomorrow and nobody had yet placed a pre-order! Like you, I've been without a main zoom for a little while, so have been using my fast prime for most things recently; as great as it is, I can't wait to get hold of this one!!!:lol::lol:

I've sent a message to Stuart from Digital Depot, he's normally good at price matching and if he can match Clifton, I'll buy one from him.
His inbox is full so I've sent it via his website.

Update
Reply from Stuart.

I can match it so no problem. I may even be able to beat it ;) don't quote me on that though. Ill call intro tomorrow and get one on order for you.

Stuart

Nifkin you are in my neck of the woods!
I'm in N10, perhaps we can meet up at some point.

Mine shall hopefully be ready for me to collect tomorrow :)

Sweet.

FYI, just had a call from Jacobs, who told me that once they have stock they'll be doing theirs for £419.99. However, they said Tamron are currently out of stock, so it may be a week or two til they get any in.

Clifton have just emailed me to say their stock is in and orders will be sent out asap

I wonder if the demand on early units will drive the price from the cheaper sellers up to match those quoting closer to £500.

I don't know if the likes of Jessops and Jacobs deal with Tampron directly although I can't see it.
So they are a little slow of the mark ordering from Intro 2020.

I know from my conversation with Stuart from Digital Depot that the likes of Clifton and Bristol are making very small profit on this lens and Intro 2020 are not impressed.
However, if they can continue at those prices and they get the demand, they'll gain a lot of sales with a potential for repeat customers.
It's nice to see a couple of independent businesses compete with very good pricing against the big boys.
I think this is going to be a very popular lens and and they can probably see the benefits of a lower margin as well.

Well the communication and assistance I have had from Clifton has been spot on. I always prefer ordering from UK suppliers, for anything, incase of faulty goods (plus the 2nd hand value seems to be greater if only slightly). I will definately be using Clifton again :)

I agree with you.
I was seriously considering buying the lens from onestop digital.
The price difference on this lens and peace of mind buying UK stock is certainly worth it.
I'll be doing the same with Digital Depot in the future, if Stuart can price match other UK retailers I'll be more than happy to continue to give him my business.

So the race is on between, me, you and Nifkin to see who is the first to post some photos and do a mini review :)

Well mine has arrived this morning, thanks Clifton

I have my camera here at work so I will try to get some shots in to test it out, although I won't be able to upload anything until much later tonight.

1st impressions are good. It feels well built, zooming is smooth albeit a little tight but I am sure that will ease up with use.

Sadly it seems like Intro 2020 were out of stock so it looks like I will have to wait.
I did say initially to Stuart at Digital Depot that I don't mind waiting for the next batch to hit our shores as I expected Intro 2020 to be out of stock.

Get shooting and lets see some test shots :)

Is this clamour getting a bit ott perchance

Its only a lens after all, not like UN aid to a disaster zone

This lens has been creating a buzz since it was announced, we all know about the popularity of the the previous model.
It's going to be the closest lens against the Canon 17-50mm IS f/2.8 and yes, perhaps the Tamron won't be as good but for the price it should sell well.
People get excited about new camera bodies (have a look at the 7D thread).
Video games create a buzz and a lot chat when a big new game is due for release.
So what's the harm in us getting excited about a lens we've been waiting for?

Meh. I'll get excited if I want to :D

If you think this is ott you're gonna love the fact I'm excited about getting a Danboard

EDIT : The slight delay in VC kicking in is apparent. Not as bad as it was made out on some forums though. I am yet to try any low-light shots.

+1 to that.

Although the Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8 is a lovely, if a bit plasticky, lens, regarded by many as being on a par with L lenses, it is very expensive in light of it's intended market being xxxD and xxD owners, many of whom are on a budget. It's high time it had some proper competition; the non-VC version of the Tamron is excellent, so if the VC version matches it in this respect at the price it's available, then it'll be a landmark lens.

And give yourself a gold star for most useful post of the week, Tijuana!:thumbs::p

I think the lens is ftw :D
