Yes
I currently have the Canon 17-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM as my ‘walkabout’ lens (On a cropped sensor Canon).

I’ve been offered a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 at a good price. I don’t think I’ll miss the 50-85mm range TBH.

What’s convincing me is that I’m starting to get interested in portrait photography and I’m thinking the extra stop might help me get quicker, sharper images.

If there’s anyone here familiar with both, or the Tamron lens pleeeease give me some input, I’ve never used a third party lens before.:help:

The Tamron is a much sharper lens than the Canon if it is the non vc lens.

ive got the non VC nikon lens and have to say it is superbly sharp. My most used lens.

I've tested the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and I was mightily impressed. The general consensus is that the Tamron is even better still. :)

Hmm, I think that's fairly conclusive! Thanks guys...

One thing though - Why on earth is the non-VC one sharper?! :cuckoo:

I had the Canon 17-85mm and the range, IS and USM are all great but I now have the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and I think it's the better lens.

That just confirms it then!

He's just sold it to someone else :(
£190.
Had my heart set on it, will start watching the 'For Sale' threads :)

If thats boxed and in MINT condition someone got a bargin, ull pay £200 - £220 for one on here and the Bay.

keep a keen eye on ebay too :)

I have a tamoron 17-50 2.8 and I have to say the difference over the Kit lens was a real wake up call to Lenses quality makes more difference than body etc

Li the Tamron 17-50 non vc is £249.99 from onestopdigital. Buy a new one and it'll probably be only £20-£30 more than a second hand one.

Tamron is great lens optically, very sharp. But it is not built to last ages, mine served me well for two years and then plastic started to give in. (zoom ring failed and hood mount started to wobble)

Would this be a decent option for a 1D Mark II as none of my short lenses (EF-S) used with my 40D will fit.

Canon 17-40 was my initial choice but I'm needing something in a bit of a rush for some landscapes.
