Hey everyone, I just bought a Tamron 17-50mm on eBay a it was listed as a wide angle lens, is it actually a wide angle lens? I'm a novice to wide angle stuff and don't really know if this lens will be suitable for the landscape and scenery shots I desire to take... Cheers in advance, Joe
 
I wouldn't say its dedicated "wide-angle" as its only 17mm at its widest.

Something in the 10-16mm range is considered true (ultra) wide-angle.

Saying that, you have bought a cracking lens. Whether 17mm is wide enough for you, i'm afraid i can't answer.

What lens have you been using upto this point that you didn't think was upto (or wide enough) for what you wanted to do?

A sigma 70-300 I do mainly wildlife shots, but I would also like to get into scenery and landscape to accompany my wildlife shots (: it probably will be wide enough I reckon (:

As you don't have anything less than 70mm, 17-50 will seem like a new world imho! :D
And a great walkabout lens....... I love mine.

Awesome thank you very much, I have the standard Nikon 18-55mm kit that came with the camera, I have barely used it to e honest though, thanks a lot mate (:
 
Well your 17-50 with go only a tad wider than your 18-55 kit lens. So do you think that is wide enough for your needs?

Maybe pointless keeping two lenses that cover the same range?

if you really want wide, why not send the 17-50 back and get a proper wide lens instead?

Then you could cover 10-16ish with a wide, 18-55 for the middle and 70-300 from your zoom?

Just a thought?
 
hmmm thats an idea, sorry to keep asking q's lol, but what lens is around the £150-£350 mark (wide angle)?
 
Keep the Tamron. It's a fast f2.8 lens and very highly sought after as a nice sharp general lens. Sell the kit lens and get the Sigma 10-20. When I had one, I found that at 10 mm, i had to lean forward to stop my feet getting in the shot!

Depends if budget allows...... kit lens is worth round £70 and he's just bought the 17-50 (potentially in error). So I assume the cost of the 17-50 is his budget?

And he says he doesn't use the 18-55, so could the 17-50 be a waste if he wants to shoot wide/landscapes?

(obviously making some assumptions there) ;)
 
awesome, will do, thanks alot Mick, and i will do Allan, might get it on saturday if all goes to plan fingers crossed, never done wide angle shots before, dont know if im doing the right thing lol (:
