I am looking to upgrade my D40 kit lens Nikkor 18-55mm for an all purpose walkabout and am considering the Tamron options. Is the 18-270mm with image stabilisation worth the extra £200 investment? I like landscapes but would also like to try and get some bird/wildlife shots. Thanks.

Cant help with the 18-200 but I used to have the 18-270 on my old D40x. The IQ was reasonable but what drove me to get rid of it was the really sloooooowwwwww focussing! In anything but god daylight its fine but anything less and it takes a good second or two of hunting before it locks. Sometimes i couldnt even get a lock.......very very frustrating. Much better off with two shorter range zooms...

Not sure how they compare, but I can confirm the 18-200 focuses really slow as well. Also, I could be wrong, but do any of those lens have focus motors built in? D40 series means that any slot driven lens will not AF. Maybe a viable alternative is the Sigma 18-250 OC HSM lens.
As Iv'e just said on another thread, have you considered an 18-135 if you dont need VR and if the 135 is long enough? I had one to save me having to keep changing from the 18-135 to a 55-200 and I cant say I have missed the extra zoom. I dont know how much the lenses are you were thinking about but you should be able to get a Nikon 18-135 for about £145 and you wouldn't need to worry about AF speed or auto-focusing on your D40.
