Yes
I was chatting to a man today, he had a Tamron 180-300 with a Macro switch, I am torn for next lens between a macro and something that goes up to 300, I crrently have a Nikon d3000 with 18-55 and 55-200 lenses.

I know next to nothing about lenses yet, and wouldnt have thought of getting another but he had picked it up from Jessops for 99 new, is this worth it, will it allow me to take better sports photography and still enable me to take some macro photography??

Thanks for helping the uneducated.

For 99 quid there's a good chance it won't do anything you want, unless of course you want rubbish pics.

Sounds like it wont be 'true' 1:1 macro........and tbh for £99 it aint gonna be brilliant. Not to say you wont get some good shots.....

No it's 1:2, guess I will save my money and wait until I can afford the right lenses for the jobs I want them to do.

Thanks.

Ah...its actually a 70-300 with a macro function from 180mm-300mm

I have one of these got mine for £109 and its not a bad lens BUT it does need lots of light and the macro function does work and is fun but you would need it on a tripod. Make sure your shutter speed is fast to compensate for no image stabilization a good rule of thumb is to match your focal length to your shutter speed so if you have your lens at 300mm make your shutter at least that.

Here is a photo I took with mine

thanks for that really nice picture, - I take a lot of pictures of butterflies, I dont think a tripod would work, I think I need a true macro lens really.

And I thought photography would be a cheap hobby, camera, lens, end off!!

I was so niaive.

Well one thing about this lens and macro is you don't need to be close to the butterfly to take the photo. You can be a fair few feet away and focus really close, I think with some practice you could get some cracking photos.

For something cheaper you should have checked out a bridge camera, I have two Fuji bridge cameras and one especially (Fuji 8000fd) is brilliant for macro work.

These were all taken on the fuji (camera was £130 brand new)

Thanks, our tutors says the dslr isn't always the best for macro work.

I especially love the frog, it's beautiful.

Food for thought as well given that that's cheaper than a macro lens.

Yeah bridge cameras are good their main drawback compared to a DSLR is the size of the sensor. The sensor is small as they have to fit a large zoom lens in a bridge so their isn't the room.

But you do get a lot for your money as well as brilliant for macro they have a large zoom equivalent to around a 400mm on a DSLR

ah well be a while before I have any spare cash anyway!!!! Thanks so much for all the input.

You're welcome, please ask if you want any more info on bridge cameras or some samples

thanks, I really do love that frog - I think I may go hunt the frogs down next time I go to the zoo, I usually head straight for the butterfly house.
