tamron 24-70 2.8 quality control issues

just ahad an email from panamoz to say they are not supplying the above lens due to quality control issues, has anyone else heard of this problem?
 
Fairly common knowledge that this lens is kown for having issues with decentering, severe front and back focusing and issues with the vc. If you get a good one though there supposed to be a pretty good lens.

Same with the 70-200 as well.
 
I have both the Tamron 24-70 VC and the 70-200 VC and they are absolutely stunning lenses.

However I have been lucky and when researching the lenses I did find mention of the quality issues.

I got both mine second hand and had seen samples. The previous owners had also confirmed they were good copies.

If buying from a retailer I would make sure you had the ability to return the lens if unhappy, and bear in mind that that will most likely incur postage charges.

However as I said when you get a good one they are simply amazing lenses and well worth the hassle of finding a decent one IMO :)
 
My first one from DigitalRev back focused beyond what I could correct with AFMA. Second copy is great, no issues.
 
TBH, it's the thing that's stopped me from getting one. Whilst I do like my 24-120 VR, I do like the rendering that my Nikon 24-70 F2.8 used to give, but my copy was no better than my 24-120 (which is why I sold it). I've heard very good things about the Tammy version, but only if you get a good one. My friend (a Canon shooter - yes we can be friends :D), had 4 copies returned to Calumet before he got one that was tack sharp. I just don't think I want the hassle.

I think when I get my post count up again and can access the classified section (yep, currently locked out), I might see if a used one comes up that the owner can verify is problem free.

Out of interest, for those that own it, how much bigger (or smaller) is it than the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 ? The pictures of it online make it look really small light and compact, but my friend says it surprised him how big and hefty the lens was ?
 
I am looking for a 24 / 70 2.8 and was looking at getting the Tamron, however I have seen too many reviews that mention the fact that they have had to return the first one to get one that is good. I think I will spend the extra and get the Canon one it costs more but I know that it will work.
 
Yes it has been the same situation from Panamoz for a while now. I enquired over a year ago and had the same response
 
I got one from Amazon a few weeks ago and used it for a wedding. I really liked it. It certainly felt nice & solid and image quality was brilliant. In the centre better than the Nikon by a hair. The VC would be useful for me when I video.

However in the end I returned it since it made no sense for me to have both the Nikon and the Tamron. I thought I'd keep it and sell the Nikon but in the end I feel the Nikon will hold it's value better for longer.

My thoughts are if you are going for the Tamron then you're better off getting it from Amazon for £650ish and taking the 5 year warranty that Tamron Europe gives. Buy it from DigitalRev you only get one year for only a £50 saving. IF Panamoz sold it then you'd have got three years but it's a moot point.

At least this way you can be sure if it goes wrong after 2-3 years then Tamron will fix it.
 
If you buy this it will probably be worth the investment of focal calibration software for the lens so that you can make sure that it doesn't need any fine tuning
 
My first copy of this lens came from Panamoz. After about two months I noticed VC wasn't working, even though it was turned on. Panamoz took it back and gave me a full refund. I ordered another from Amazon and within 3 weeks the same thing happened. I also had lens errors and it would lock the camera up. To be honest both copies were pretty poor on my 5Dmkiii as far as speed and reliability went. Again, I sent it back. Ended up with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 mkii. That's was 3 years ago.
I know a mate who has had this lens since before mine, and while he says it works fine I've proven it's decent red quite a bit.
Sometimes I feel it's just not worth trying anymore with 3rd party equipment although I realaie many don't have issues. Then again, most people will swear blind they don't have any issues but that's not to say they don't, just that it either doesn't matter or they don't notice it.
 
I bought one last year and within a week the VC went. When I got it back from being repaired I noticed that the focus was wildly off, but only with the centre 5 points of my 5DIII (the ones that are double cross type with f2.8 lenses), all other focus points were fine and the IQ was great. I then picked up a 70D and the lens wouldn't work with it at all. In the end I got shot of the lens (and my Tamron 70-200VC), bought some Canon glass and all's well.
 
I found the outer AF points on my first copy were terrible. The second copy was noticeabley better. Both struggled to focus in lowlight, or rather AF confirmation came on AF was out very slightly.

People say get the Tamron for its VC, something the Canon doesn't have so its a big selling point, but in my case that was hardly ever working and it's not a particularly cheap lens.
 
I have had 6 copies of the 70-200VC and 5 were duds. I don't care how sharp the lens is as you ain't guaranteed it will perform the same on a different body, would never ever entertain another one. Oh yeah and I had a 90mm VC that was completely pants too just recently
 
tamron's 24-70 VC quality control issue is well documented. if you do want one i suggest you get it from UK source as tamron offers 5 year warranty on that. so if things do go wrong you can send them back. but you will need to insist on a new lens. To be very honest, chances are you may be without your lens more than with as some of the stories on here have unfolded. In my opinion it is not worth the risk if you are serious about taking photos.

although some of the above posts slates all 3rd party lenses seem far too sweeping. my Sigma art lens is perfectly fine. out of the box onl needed max +3 adjustment. My old tokina lenses were perfectly fine also and the tamron 70-300 VC i had also worked flawlessly actually that was better than the Nikon variant which i also tried for sake of comparison. so i think it is just the recent tamron variants seem to suffer these quality control issues. Although I don;t believe the same issues are thre fore the 70-200 VC or the other newer lenses.

just want to add another one in there...all 3rd party lenses to be avoided..

Anyone got any comparison to Tamron's 28-75mm 2.8?
Similar focal range but considerably cheaper just without the stabilisation.
Had the tamron 17-50 2.8 before and was a great lens so hoping to get the longer range without all the issues these seem to have.
 
I'd heard of the problems so I looked at wex and saw that they were selling it for only £50 more than panamoz (if they were selling) and is backed by the Wex guarantee and the Tamron 5 year warranty so just went for it.
My copy is sharper than my canon 24-70 f2.8 L mark 1 (*1). There are no decentering or AF issues(*2). Everything works fine. I've only had it a month though so cannot comment on reliability

*1 - I have both canon and Nikon semi pro bodies. The canon 24-70 is.. well... canon fit. The Tamron 24-70 is nikon fit and placed on similar grade & megapixel bodies for comparison.
*2 - I do have 2 bodies suitable for that lens. On one the AF requires a +15 micro adjust. On the other no micro adjust is required. However, 2 other lenses require the +15 micro adjust on that body and none on the other, which indicates it is a body only issue.
