Tamron 24-70 f2.8 vc usd

well i just had a play with the brand new Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 VC USD @ cameraworld in chelmsford and I was amazed, the lens is stunning very sharp, vibrant and creamy bokeh on all test images that i took in the shop with a canon 600D
I want one :love:

Was this on sale or just some sort of post production test unit manufacturers send out
 
Been debating between pre-ordering one of these or getting the Nikon equivalent for a while. Can't make my mind up the V.C would be handy but worried about what happens when I eventually change bodies and the usual good to bad copy issues with Tamron.
 
It is out now, Jacobs have it in for £999, Park Cameras £1099.99, WEX £1099.99.

ETA: I was really interested in this lens as I need something in this focal length. I only really have the budget for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, but found out I have been left some jewelry in a will which when sold will give me enough for the Sigma 24-70 HSM, and figured if this was only slightly more expensive (say upto £850) then I could find the extra. Unfortunately I need a lens by August and I can't see this dropping in price that much so soon.

It may well be the case, but let's just wait for some more reviews. (remember 17-50 VC fiasco?) I'm waiting for photozone.de verdict.

Also don't forget that lenses will behave rather differently on full frame sensors since you have all four corners to worry about!

It is the only image stabilised 24-70 lens at the moment, so if it's sharp they are on a winner here. At this price it won't make me ditch the canon brick, but a bit less and many will jump on.
 
I was seriously considering upgrading to this from my superb Tammy 28-75mm but not at this price, was expecting £700 or even less.

That is my feeling. I was expecting it to be released around the £850 mark and then to drop to around £700.

But the reviews seem to be promising - people who have this lens over on POTN seem to find it is sharper across the whole frame than the Canon Mk I, and the AF is only slightly slower. The VC is apparently very good too.

My main criteria in a lens is superb IQ with AF being lower down on my priorities. For the price the 28-75 is top of my list, but I am pregnant with my first and am shooting a family wedding this summer so decent AF would be handy (not essential though - I use my Tammy 70-200 for wildlife and birds and can manual focus it happily enough too); this lens does appeal to me, but unfortunately my finances are needed elsewhere now. I will be watching the price closely over the next few months though.

I agree, way too close to a Nikon 24-70 for my liking...

Uniform performance across the frame is much better, even if the centre is slightly less sharp. See comparisons at f/5.6 and Canon wins that by a mile (except 70mm)
 
A few reviews say good things and bad things about both these lenses but I the end I think it's down to the person that is buying the lens and it's nice to know all the pros and cons of each lens. Tamron is sharper than the canon wide open at F/2.8 but when stoped down the canon is sharper and little improvement is seen on the tamron, Tammy is sharpe across the focal range canon isn't, canon has better build than the Tammy, but Tammy is cheaper. Swings and roundabouts. As I said above weigh out the pros and cons and pick the one best suited for u. For me the Tamron is a better choice, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better lens. It's just that the pros weigh out the cons more than they do on the canon, at least for me they do.

Canon mk1 is (was apparently - discontinued) cheaper. If something is not sharp by f/8 across the frame, well that's really bad at that price. As I see it Tamron is exlusively wedding/concert low light lens, not a general purpose one like Canon.

Canon mk2 is a heck more expensive when it hits the shops (they are clearing out mk1 at the moment) and a heck more sharper that the old one or Tamron.
I'd rather one v. good expensive one than a dodgy glass backed up by many other very limited lenses like 50/1.4 or 28/1.8.

just out of curiosity how do u know how sharp is the Canon 24-70 F/2.8L II?
seeing as it hasn't hit the shops yet?
