Evening all

Further to my thread yesterday, am quite intersted in this lens but put-off rather by the under-current of comments on dodgy AF.

Would really like to hear thoughts from anyone that owns this lens, especially with a 5D.

My use will be "general" but particularly my children out playing. I can't afford the L version at the moment but also the compact size is something I'm keen on, as a big camera does create a bit of an atmosphere at some places.

Thanks

Right, got this lens yesterday :) Hoping to get out later and post up some samples later!

Initial thoughts - compact, fairly light, quite nicely made. AF noise similar to 50mm f1.8. AF speed slower than L but not too bad except end-to-end - would be better if it had a limit switch say 1.5m+. Focuses very close though. A slight play in manual focus. Distance scale not very accurate!

Talking to myself on this but for the benefit of the search (and a couple of people asked last week) - here is a sample shot. Nice and sharp:

100% crop (bear in mind 1000 ISO):

Foreground bluring seems quite nice (I found it odd on the 70-200 F4L). Heavy vignetting at 28mm f2.8, gone by f5.6. OK elsewhere. Barrell and pincushion pretty acceptable right through the range. Not much chromatic aberation even at the corners so far anyway.

Some focus speed tests on the 5D...

End-to-end (lens cap on):

Tamron 28-75 - 2.1s
70-200 F2.8L - 1.8s
50mm F1.8 - 1.7s
85mm F1.8 - 1.5s

Short-stroke (~1m to 2m), dim-ish room:

85mm F1.8 - 1.4s
70-200 F2.8L - 0.9s
Tamron 28-75 - 0.8s
50mm F1.8 - 0.8s

Odd result with the 85mm, I've always found that very fast in actual use. The vaugeries of testing!

Anyway so thanks to whoever it was that suggested this lens, I'm pleased with it TBH :)

Cheers
