Tamron 70-300 Di VC USD - zoom ring

Hi,

I have a Tamron 70-300 Di VC USD, which I find to be an incredible lens for what is costs: VC is very good, build quality is high and image quality is excellent.

Comparing it to my Canon 24-105L (which is better in every way), I find the Tamron's zoom ring to be a bit stiff (on the other hand, it does not creep at all).

Yesterday, I noticed that if I mount the hood in reverse I can zoom like if it was a push-pull zoom lens. I did it only 2 or 3 times, but it's easier to use it like this (to me).

My question is: can it damage the lens?
Mechanically speaking, can it be not recommended to use it this way?

I used to do that on my cheaper Sigma 70-300 with no ill effect, mainly because the hood was a bucket which covered the zoom ring. With the Tamron though, I always mount the hood properly and use the zoom ring.

Do you consider the Tamron's zoom ring to be smooth and light?
Maybe I'm being unfair, comparing it with the 24-105L ...

I can only compare with that sigma and nikon kits lenses to be honest and I'm sure there are smoother operating lenses around

Yeahhh... It's a great lens, way better than kit lenses.

i have the same lens on a D7000 and use it the same way as you do as the zoom ring in inaccessible when the hood is reversed, also when carring it with my sling the lens does slide forward if not holding it as well.
There appears to be no anti lens creep device so i cannot see it damaging it
