Does anyone have the tamron 70-300 that has the inbuilt motor for Nikons DSLRs? I used one sometime ago on a D40x, and though the quality was excellent, the focusing was rubbish, very juttery and frequently wouldn't focus. However, I was wondering if anyone has that lens and has used it on the D5000, which has a far superior AF system, and if it is good.

Thanks

I'm new to DSLR's, but I bought the D5000 with the twin kit lens last month.

The 70-300 is pretty pants with the auto focus. It can take quite a few seconds to find the correct setting, sometimes not finding it at all.

On the other hand the picture quality is ok'ish. Not too many complaints considering how much it costs. Also i've been using a Raynox DCR 250 with it, which gives some pretty impressive macro shots.

Hope this helps in some way to answer your question, as I say i'm only a noob. :)

Thanks. :) I reckon I'm best going and trying it out. Damned annoying it doesn't have the inbuilt motor!

With the tamron would you are probbably better sketching the picture you want, it will be faster than the AF system, unless you really need the 300mm id grab a nikon 55-200

I got the Tamron myself today, and can't really see what all the fuss is about? The AF is slightly slower than the Nikon's AF, but still pretty quick!

Also, image quality is good! Would recommend for the price! :D

I have a Tamron 70-300mm too ..there a great lens for the money with good optics..but I do agree there a little on the slow side at focusing

Went to the waterfowl park yesterday and got some great pictures using this lens.

On the downside when I was in the hide at the feeding station and the birds were coming and going quite quickly I missed a lot of shots and ended up manually focusing.

Thanks for all the advice. :D Will go and try it out.

I havn't got one but have researched before when I was trying to come up with a cheaper option to the Nikon 70-300 - from all the reading I did I came to the conclusion that the APO version of the Sigma 70-300 was a better buy than the Tamron. How true that is I don't know as I havn't had hands on either!

I ended up with the AF-S Nikon 55-200 VR...

I have one of these and have had a lot of fun with it but I have to agree the auto focus on it is.... well, pants. I have also had recurring problems with the focus motor sometimes just not working. A quick flick on and off with the camera and it works again, but a PITA to be honest. My dad had an identical problem with his too.

But for £100 you can't really complain I suppose. The macro setting is pretty good and as long as you pre focus to the rough area your going to want to shoot it's fast enough for most situations.
