okay, I have a Sony A200 with the kit lens, but ive realised that i need a telephoto lens, I want one for general usage, some close up shots and maybe some animal shots.

The tamron is considerbly cheaper and has a 1:2 magnification ratio in macro mode, but i dont know wether to get the sony because its the same brand as my DSLR, is the sony sharper?, ive heard its quicker at focusing as well? but is that as important as the macro mode of the tamron? Im also on a tight budget as its just as a hobby.

please help, ordering today (or tomorrow)! Thanks :)

read this i have one very soft NOT recommended (sorry the tamron)

this photo was taken with a tamron 70-300, and the sharpness on the face or lack of it, is clearly evident.

comment from a user "Absolutely the worst decision iv ever made. This this should be used as a paperweight. In fact it fails as a paperweight! it is slow slow focus and is soft at 300 along with only sharp at f/8-11 and you can forget night shots. "

the 75-300mm gets brill reviews and can even be used on FF if you ever decide to go that way. companies own brand lenses are always better (i read somewhere) because its designed for that camera. its a bit like a mac everything thats an apple product just "works", same applies for cameras.

Oh yeah! Missed that bit!!:bonk:

Anyway the stripping gears problem was on very early Sigma stock, and almost exclusively on the high torque Alpha 700........

I wouldn't worry too much with an a200/300/350

wrong & wrong - they strip on everything Alpha - the A200/A300/A350 & A700 all use the same in-body motor which is stronger than that in the A100 but they'll even strip on an A100.
the A700 at least has the menu option for slowing the AF motor but the A2xx/A3xx don't.

Barring sample variation the Sony is no better than the Tamron in fact the Tamron has a wider max aperture at most focal lengths.
Another alternative would be a Minolta 100-300 APO or the ideal solution if he could swing the extra cash is the 70-300 G SSM.

That's me told!!!

I've never heard of anyone with an a2xx/a3xx stripping the gears, all the cases of stripped gears I've read about were on the a700!

I do know that Sigma have tried to sort that problem out on the new lenses though as they had too many returned under warrenty.........

I have a Tamron 70-300 Canon fit and I would definately spend the extra money and buy the Sony lens. I have spent 6 months kicking myself for not spending the extra :)

Tbh, if you're prepared to spend extra then yes the sony is the best. Then again, when i used the tamron on a d50, I was getting much sharper shots than now using 450D and Canon 75-300 USM. Not tried raw yet, i know they'll be better

okay im back after a few VERY busy days at university

i see a few mixed opinions here, as i much as i wish i did, i dont have the budget to go over £200,

i was going to get the sigma before but diddnt because lots of people are complaning about the stripping problem,

the only other lens' in the price range are - the tamron or sony DT 70-300, i think?

I think im going to go for the tamron just because of the price and seems to be near equal to the sony.

if you have anything else to say please do, i will probably order it on sunday or monday now.

thanks all :)

okay i know this is a very late reply but...

i went with the tamron because of the money and im very happy with it, it works, its just what i wanted, it does the job quite well actually...

quite slow focusing but once its there it locks well

build quality is very good when the barrel is in, but the feel of the barrel is very plasticy.

but that doesnt bother - im very happy, thanks everyone for the input :)

good stuff

so where are the sample shots ;-)

okay heres some more, some of actual deers this time.

i just noticed some dust on the landscape photo which i need to sort out.

im quite impressed how these came out really, seeing as i was just throwing my camera around snapping while not caring about blur lol all the deer ones are cropped and edited.
