Hi Simon - its a very good lens generally very well regarded for its price - I've used one on a D800 and D750 before with great results.
I'm not sure about the 55-300 myself but I know the Tamron pretty much matches the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR FX lens.
Exif data for focal lengths would be very useful for the OP.
Snapper67: I'm assuming your photo of the plane was taken @ 300mm?
The reason I ask is the photo isn't sharp and this tends to be the norm on budget lenses.
I've previously owned the Tamron 18-270 VC and I found the same with this lens.
I recently read a few reviews including the Tamron 70-300mm as I've got back into photography and was wondering how budget lenses faired compared to those I used around 2008.
They still seem to lack sharpness at the maximum focal length but I wouldn't let that put you off as a beginner as I was quite happy with the Tamron 18-270 VC for over a year.
Exif data for focal lengths would be very useful for the OP.

r.
I’ve got the same lens and it’s great,
Had it for quite a while now,
Use it alongside my 150-600 for when I don’t need as much reach at the lower end,
Real nice lens on my D7500,
Here’s one I got a few weeks ago with the said lens,
Exif data will be available in the Flickr page.
