Tamron 90mm Macro di

Hi guys, what are the positive/negative points on this lens? There's a second hand one at a local shop to me and I'm very tempted. I hear good things about it but just wanted to get some views from some users. It'll mainly be used as a macro lens but wouldn't mind trying some portrait stuff with it as I hear it's fairly good for that as well. If anyone has any pictures (especially portraits but macro as well) I'd be very grateful.

Great for both macro and portraits, I never found a negative with the one I owned

Its a superb lens,a little slow to focus but the images it can produce are stunning.

Make sure it's the motor in lens version, the slightly older and cheaper version was screw driven and won't AF on your body. Not a huge problem for Macro use but could be for portrait and short telephoto uses.

It's almost too sharp for portraits lol

Stunning lens apart from AF but I found anytime I shot macro with it I always used manual focus!

I'd echo Nod's point above about the built-in motor.

With macro you'd be using manual focus so (if not the built-in motor version) any lack of AF shouldn't be an issue. If you intend to use it as a portrait lens it may be more of an issue for you (although great shots can still be achieved manually!).

The Tamron is always a lens I recommend as the images it can produce are stunning....especially for the price.

As an alternative the Tokina 100mmm f/2.8 also gets rave reviews and seems to be able to be got at reasonable money used. Would be a big step up in terms of built from the Tamron although there is no built in motor version as far as I am aware.

Thanks for the input everyone, it's great to hear all the positives. Hopefully I'll manage to get there in the next couple of days. As for the BIM, they have one with and one without looking at the model numbers

Thanks for the heads up on the Tokina, I have heard about that before and no it doesn't have a motor.
