Ok, been trawling the net for a decent lens for my new home portrait business that im setting up, ive been torn between the 24-105 IS, the canon 24-70 2.8, and now ive come upon this lens the tamron 28-75 2.8, been reading alot of reviews on this lens and it gets alot of thumbs up to be honest and its a third of the price of canon 24-70 2.8.
Does anyone have or of had experience of this lens and be nice if any of you guys have any portrait pics i could see with this lens, just to see the quality of it......:thumbs:

Yes, I've used it for home studio shots and it's more than capable, nice and sharp at f/8. I recently cleared them all out of my flickr so no examples to hand, although I think there's a few wedding ones taken on it if you have a look. I recently upgraded to a Nikon 24-70 though which blows it out of the water :D
 
Cheers dave, apparently its as sharp as the canon 24-70 2.8 in the center.

I use it and it is a good lens. Snob value means I don't use it as much as the 50mm or 70-200 but image quality is very good especially f5.6 and f8. Is it as good as the nikon costing 3 or 4 times the price? No, but if the nikon is fairly priced this is underpriced.
 
I used to have this lens which i upgraded to the Canon 24-70mm -when i tried them side by side the IQ is very similar in the center but the canon's better towards the edge of the frame and the focus is in a different league on the Canon, but in the studio on a cropped body you'll struggle to tell the difference also look at the Tamron 17-50mm non- IS version better focal length on a crop body - similar to 24-70 on FF

Hi Paul, which body were you using when you tested them side by side, as on a crop 1.6x the sharpness on the edge of the frame doesnt really play an issue, its more of a prob on ff apparently?? From what i understand wouldnt the 28-75 2.8 tammy be more sutable for for portraits than the 17-50 2.8?

I tested them on a FF , 5D MKII - As for suitability it depends how much room you have :)

Surprised at that Dave, i have the Tamron, and i've used the Nikon and i didn't see any real difference in image quality, however the build quality of the Nikon is far superior, but then you would expect it to be for 3 times the price of the Tamron :D

Try the 18-55mm you've listed in your kit bag to get a feel - set it to 28mm to represent the widest on the 28-75mm and see if you can frame the type of shot you will be after.

I've just bought a second hand Sigma 24 - 60, obviously not as long as the tamron but there are some great reviews and portrait pics out there.

Will be using it today so i'll give it a proper test.

Was a toss up between this one, the sigma 24 - 70 and the tamron 28 - 75. From what I've read (have no personal experience of it) the tomron and the 24 - 60 are both superior to the sig 24 - 70.

Hello again cris, we do keep popping up on each others threads dont we lol, i think i might go for the tammy 28-75,it gets some cracking reviews, im going to do some testing later with my kit lens, and see how i pan out for room......:D
 
Andy,

You know what I think of the lens, IMO you wont be dissappointed with the lens, if you have the cash get the Canon but the Tamron is alot better andmore versitile than the kit lens.
