Tamron AF 70-300 Problem - Apeture issue?

Hi All,

I've got a Tamron AF 70-300 which is about three years old and is used with an EOS 450D.

Its seems as though the apeture may have become jammed somehow, as once you go past 180mm the lens will only work on the apeture setting of 5.3, anything else will throw up a 001 error on the camera.

At anything less than 180mm the problem does not seem to exist.

Has anyone experience an issue like this before? If so do you know what the cause and likely cost to fix are?

I am wondering if it would be more cost effective to simply buy a replacement lens rather than attempting to fix?

Any input greatly appreciated.

Chris

OK, I've phoned around and the consensus seems to be that it's not worth getting this fixed.

Given this I have been looking around and have come up with a few possible replacements.

Obviously these are all budget lenses so are not going to be brilliant but I would welcome any feedback on them:

Option one:
Like for like Tamron replacement (£100 from Jessops)

Option two:
Sigma 70-300MM (£129 from Comet)

Option three:
Canon EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III USM (Around £125 on Ebay)

Option four:
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (£145 on Amazon)

Is there going to be much realworld difference between a 250 and 300mm lens?

I gather that option four is an older lens, but is the IS a worthwhile addition?

Any feedback very welcome as I'm completely lost!

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I had a Nikon fit Tamron 70-300 on my D80 for years... it's not gone wrong, but I changed up for my sports photography as I felt I would get more from a higher quality lens!

Depending what you are using it for and how serious you are, I would recommend going for the Canon (if its anything like the Nokin).

The Tamrom (for me) suffered with Chromatic aberration anywhere near full zoom and I've now realised wasn't overly sharp...

Hope this helps!

Gareth.
