Tamron And Sigma 70-200 f2.8 Query

I really need an f2.8 lens to hopefully move my sports photography up to another level but financies are not brilliant at the moment so I am looking for an older Tamron or Sigma 70-200 f2.8.My query is are there any compatibility problems with older versions of these lenses working on my 400D
 
I have tamron 70-200 2.8 which i have to say is renowned for poor autofocus performance. I always use the centre point and recompose and only use it for static subjects so autofocus speed not an issue, but it will be for shooting sports of course!

What i will say, for my copy at least, is that on a crop it is damn sharp, even wide open, but for sports i would not recommend it.

I use a 40d so should be fine on your 400d

Thanks for that feedback however I currently use a Canon 70-210 EF f4 (20 + years old) so I am guessing that the Tamron will be at least the equal of that in focussing although way short of new lenses with USM motors.
 
I've been reading the reviews on the Sigma 70-200's....they sound like cracking lenses for the money....even the oldest version is very sharp and comparable with 2.8L...this is my next purchase :thumbs:
 
We're using a very old (mid 90's possibly) Tamron 70-210 F2.8 (albeit on Nikon) for shooting point to point and find it fantastic!
This was about £150 from ebay for memory, the new versions you'd be looking around £300-400
