Tamron finally go VC on 70-200mm & 90mm macro

Interesting Cagey:cool: I was just looking at some youtube vids comparing the nikon with the sigma and tamron last night.

You have got me in a tamron mood this week:cool::D

Seemed the major gripe (after the lack of v/c) was the focus speed which seemed a lot slower than the sigma and nikon (expected, i think the tamron was about a third of the price). See if they've done anything towards that in the real world with this version maybe?
 
I imagine that the USD will be quicker than the old micromotor but we'll need to wait for tests.
 
I have always preferred Tamron to sigma. The 17-50 has just been great for me over the past 2 years, never felt the need for a small prime. I was in the market for a 70-200 last year and really wanted the tamron version over the sigma. But I was turned off by all the reports of sluggish AF, plus it was harder to get hold of. I ended up getting the sigma and was disappointed. I found it soft wide open, and it had horrible CA at 200mm. I sold it on in the end and bought a 20 year old Nikon 80-200. Cracking lens for it's age. I sold that last week, and am back in the market for a 70-200 again. I'll be keeping a close on this new tammy. And if I'd not bought a used Nikon 105mm recently, I'd be after this new 90mm also.
 
Interesting to hear of your experiences with the Sigma 70-200....yeah, the 80-200 looks good, tempting for next year :)
It's either something like that or the Nikon 105 (still deciding which way to go, cant be both thats for sure!)....all out of reach slightly at the moment though :( The 90mm will be interesting right enough...
 
It was the USD I was looking for more than the VC as that was the big disapointment with the last 70-200mm it was sharp and affordable but the AF was a bit on the slow side with all that heavy glass.
 
The Sigma was the first lens I bought brand new in a long time, think the last one before was the Nikon 55-200, which i never got on with. i always aimed for a 2.8 zoom.

That's why i ended up selling the 80-200 really, I got a good deal on a used 105mm, and since I love a bit of macro as well as portraiture, it's ideal. The 80-200 was more flexible of course, and just as sharp. But having VR and macro on top is bonus for me.

Shipping your tammy in the morn btw ;) Looking around here for a suitable box :D

Yeah, will spend 5 or 600 on a lens early next year hopefully. The world of miniature is something I really fancy getting into, i hear the 105 is built like a tank as well. Probably the way i'll go....and true to form no doubt from here:lol:
 
The 105mm is really nice to hold and use. That big chunky focus ring, really smooth for manual focus - all metal outer barrel, reasonable weight, it's well balanced even on my D90 - and the VR allows sharp hand held macro at slow shutter speeds. It's a real gem for the money.
 
I think you should replace Tamron with Sigma there. Sigma have the worst QC of the lot.
 
Says who? I've had 3 sigma lenses that were all fail. I've read dozens and dozens of similar complaints around the net over the years. Try not to ruin this thread with your silly posts eh.

Agreed. I've had to send back every Sigma lens I've bought.
 
Never had a problem with any of my tamrons but have had focus issues with a couple of sigmas that had to go back.

Wow so you are basing the fact that because you have owned an impressive 3 Sigma lenses that there QC control is not as good as Tamrons's. :lol:

Absolute nonsense.

I know several people with Tamron and Sigma lenses, I have owned both. (Many more than just 3 btw) Everyone I have ever spoken too and everything I have ever read has shown Sigma's QC to be superior. Tamron are notoriously the worst 3rd party manufacturer when it comes to QC.

Have also had several Sigmas with focus issues and one Tamron that cost significantly less with focus issue. All Canons, Sonys, Nikons have all been fine. Doesnt put me off Sigma that much as I just return for replacements or refund, when you get a good copy they are excellent value for money and Im very happy with my current Sigma lenses.

Do you just make this stuff up as you go along? Sigma have by far the worst qc reputation. Whether it is justified or just a meme is debatable, but the reputation remains.

mate every manufacturer has bad eggs and for any of you to say who has/hasn't the best QC is absolutely ridiculous. Quit making fools of yourselves all the lenses come with warranties and if they aren't performing to the required level due to defect you can get the problem resolved!

Ive had issues with just about all the main photography brands from Canon (17-55IS lenses) to Canon camera bodies to Nikon camera bodies etc.


**** happens just sort it out with the manufacturer and quit yapping on forums about it

But TonyNI, Sodafarl, there are definitely more people on forums like this who suffer difficulties with Sigma stuff over any other brand. It wouldn't be an issue if Sigma were outselling everyone else by several times over, it would just be down to the law of averages, but I know that pretty much every single Sigma I've had contact with through work has had an issue of some sorts that's either been lived with or required the lens being sent back to Sigma HQ. Sigma may produce nice lenses with good IQ but too many times people have to deal with an issue like AF calibration...

And before you ask, I've had one duff body from Canon (a 50D that was overegging the magenta, dealt with through a firmware upgrade) and one lens from them, a 28-90mm that had a stiff AF/MF switch. With Nikon I've had a mirror box replacement after 60,000 clicks on a D2x and the hotshoe on an SB-28 cracked unexpectedly. Pretty good going in my book....
 
My daughter bought a Sigma 17-70 OS lens that forward focussed so much she could have taken photos of tomorrow

Then there was the 18-50 I bought that was softer than a roll of andrex and deserved to go down the same place

Never again, just a waste of time and money which thankfully we got back due to good retailers (neither batted an eyelid when taking the lenses back)

To be fair I can see why in the last 3 weeks i have seen threads of people re routing off this forum with the amount of **** talk....
 
Sigmas 50 1.4 outclasses canons and nikons. Their 85 1.4 is also a close second to the double the money Nikon and canons as is the 70-200 OS. It's great to have these options or we would be even more ripped off if these lenses didn't have competition. Sigma have ramped up their optics in recent years..
 
Yes they have but plenty of people have had issues with focusing on the lenses you mention.Even my local store has said they get a fair few of the sigma 50mm 1.4 returned! So guess all camps have their own QC issues:cool:

Its refreshing to look into these petty debates and see that they do go on without my presense...all those involved look a bit sad to say the least - you are arguing over which company you prefer essentially.

About the lenses: I'm excited about the 70-200mm - we were discussing this in another thread so looking forward to testing it when I get the chance!

90mm? Eh...I had a tamron 90 before...I didn't like it for the focusing speed and extended barrel when focusing so am not too fussed by its newer announcement...
 
I'm interested in the 70-200mm as well. I've been looking at the Canon and Sigma 2.8's for a little while and it'll be good to have a 3rd option to throw into the mix.

Phil, shut up. Again, you are not understanding. I have zero preference. I love Sigmas primes when they work and I love a few Tamron lenses too. I said,if anyone cares to read properly and comprehend before calling me sad or petty, that Sigma has a worse REPUTATION and this may or may not be unfounded which is another debate. It may be just a meme ( look it up) .
