Hi all :),

I'm a complete newbie to photography and recently purchased my first dslr (Cannon 600D). My girlfriends parents have generously offered us a Tamron 28-300mm lens from their old Cannon film SLR that they haven't used in a very long time. I'm not sure of its compatibility so I thought I would check here first. I've uploaded a picture of it.

It should be fine. I'm not aware of any compatibility problems with Tamron lenses, unlike older Sigma and Tokina lenses. The only downside is that lens was designed for a full frame film camera where 28-300mm is wide angle to telephoto. On a cropped sensor camera like yours, 28mm is standard lens focal length, not a wide angle.

Also, it's Canon not Cannon. Cannon make gas fires.

Will it auto focus with it being an older lens?
It should do. Canon's EF lens mount has been here since about 1987 and, whilst they'll have tweaked the way cameras talk to lenses over the years, something as fundamental as AF should be absolutely constant over that time.
