After some advice, if anyone can shed some light.
I purchased a Canon 550d with 18 - 55 ls lens and i am loking to puchcase a wide angle and telephoto lens.
I have seen this Tamron lens - Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Canon AF) at a reduced price £99.00 new.
Is this worth the purchase or would i just be throwing my money away.

Its a solid enough lens but is prone to purple fringeing, however at that price and if your budget wont stretch to a Sigma APO or a Canon 55-250 then it does a fair job

I can stretch my budget if required.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS Zoom Lens @ £219.00
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Canon EF @ £319.00

if i could afford one of the above what would you advise.

You can get the 55-250 IS much cheaper than that if you buy the old mk1 version thats still in stock(£145 on amazon), the difference between it and the mk2 is sposed to be only cosmetic.

I can only say that I am very happy with my 55-250mm (unlike the kit lens!) and the IS is great.

Don't bother with the tamron, too much of an unpredictable lens in terms of its image quality,
Sigma are worth a look at. I would go for the 70-300 apo or the new sigma 70-300 os, I own an apo lens and it is great. After playing with the os, I would go for that if I had to make your choice.

Following up on this, I am also considering the Canon 55-250 to replace a broken 70-300 Tamron.

Does anyone know how big a difference the 50mm reduction in reach will have? Will it be more than made up for by the improved sharpness from IS and a better lens?

I here it has great reviews, but it sounds like it has a small problem when it comes to filters.

The difference between 250 and 300mm is minimal. I'd get the Canon.

For all intent and purposes the Sigma APO and Tamron LD Di are neck and neck from most reviews. Just if you get a good copy of one it can be marginally better than the other, just buy the one that's cheapest. But the Canon is probably better than both unless you pay more for the Sigma 70-300 DG OS or the Tamron 70-300 VC USD but they are more money.

i use the 55-250 IS canon lens and love it for the price had mine of http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=1838&sd=bund quite cheap at £137.95 new
