What do people think of this lens? I'm thinking of getting it as a first macro lens. ideally i would love an L class canon, but just cannot fund that at the moment. The tamron is more affordable at the mo. I have a canon 40D as the body.
 
If you can stretch to a Canon 100mm (used around £280-£300) you will get faster, internal focusing (the end of the lens will not move in / out as you focus) which is ideal when not using the lens for macro, increased working distance - (distance from the end of the lens to subject) 150mm for the Canon and 99mm for the Tamron - which is good when shooting bug , butterfly's etc.

the sigma was my first macro lens :) colour & contrast not as good as the Canon - There's two types now, the original does not have internal focusing and a MWD of 122mm, the new version has along with OS? but is expensive £800.
 
DigitalPhoto this month are doing a review of macro lenses. A Canon one came out top. Canon EF100mm, followed by the Nikon 105mm followed by the Tamron 90mm.

OK but I have the Tamron, and it is sharp as a sharp thing! Its a well respected lens. Trouble is when all three lens are excellent they still have to pick a winner.
 
I also have the Tamron lens - it delivers sharp results and is also useful as a portrait lens.

It's only downside is the slow/noisy autofocus but most macro shots are taken on manual focus so not really an issue.
