Ive got the tamron 17-50 2.8, but ive just brought a canon 40d which came with the 17-85mm IS lens, now these are near enough the same focal lenth so which do i keep the canon asa it has IS or the tamron as its 2.8 and great in low light, and super sharp, any help would be great.......

I would say the Tamron, have had both and the Tamron is by raf the superior. At those focal lengths the IS doesnt add a vast amount so go with Tamron.

Canon has much better focus speed but thats it, Tammy is sharper and faster. I sold my Canon to buy a Tamron, its much better except for the focussing... You decide what you need :)

I'd say keep the tamron, the extra f-stop is worth the pay off of no IS. Also daft as it may sound you'll probably get more for the canon on ebay that for the tamron even though it's probably the lesser of the two lenses - the name is still demanding the extra cash, even if sometimes the specs don't warrant it

Have you had a good play with both lenses on your 40D - which is giving you the better results, which feature is more important (IS or 2.8)? This may help to make your mind up.

I've not used the Tamron, never had a problem with the 17-85, but I have heard the Tamron is supposed to be a great lens.

Do you need to sell one of them now, could you not wait for a couple of months, play with them and see which is generally getting used and which is sitting in your bag ? Not much help I know

+1 on the above, go test them against each other.
One particular test that would be worth doing is to see how they perform at different apertures. I've found that none of my lenses are perfect wide open, the question being how quickly they are spot on on stopping down. e.g. my 85mm F1.8 is actually very good wide, but from F2.0 downwards, I couldn't see any significant differences. My 24-105 F4 however wasn't spot on until F5.6.
In addition, have a look at the colour rendition. I've owned both the Tammy 17-50 and 28-75 and preferred the colours from my Canon lenses instead.

Cheers guy's, looks like a lens testing weekend this weekend then eh
