Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a replacement for my Sony kit lens.

I would be interested to know what peoples thoughts are on the following two lenses and which one you feel would be the better purchase.

The lenses are:

The Tamron AF 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 XR DI II Lens

or

The Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Take care,

Keith

I've been very pleased indeed with my Sigma 18-200, same spec as the one you've put, wIth a Canon figment for my 400d. It's proved it be very versitile, sharp, and easy to carry thanks to be pretty compact and lightweight.

I'm about to put mine up for sale purely because I've just gone full frame, but otherwise it'd have been going nowhere.

second vote for the sigma,

I use the Sigma 18-200 as my walkabout lens, in fact it's been a real workhorse for me, it gets used nearly all the time, very sharp and compact

overall the best lens I've bought imho

I had the Tamron on a Sony A200 once upon a time and it was a bit pants.....slowest and least accurate AF I've ever used on any lens/body combo and soft as hell.....only decent thing about it was the colours and contrast which were fairly good. Build quality was also very poor.....never used the Sigma, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't better than the Tamron!

Just to add, the 55-200mm Tamron is very very good for the money, build quality aside! It can be picked up for £100ish new and around £60 second hand, can't hurt to have it in your bad at that price!

Afraid I haven't used either of those lenses, or anything with that amount of zoom I'm afraid.

OK after searching and reading various reviews the Sigma seems to come out top.

So I have now purchased the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC
