Tamron Returns?

Hi

Well, I did a search but couldn't find anything close enough.

I bought a Tamron 17-50 non-VC in July to go with my 500d, usually for walk-around shots of holiday visits. However, recently I upgraded to a 7d and out of interest compared it to my 50mm 1.8.

I noticed that the focus seemed faily off, as it about 4-6cm forward! Now this is using a tripod but in low light, using a flash at 2.8, 5 and 5.6.

I will test it a bit more thouroughly but is it cause for a return if true?

I thing the most pertinent question is did you see that focus was off when using it with your previous camera? If the lens really is that far out it will stand out like a sore thumb.

I would expect a prime to be sharper than a kit zoom so maybe what you are seeing is just that improvement.

Does the 7d - sorry but I don't know Canon kit - have focus adjustment?
 
It's normal for Tamron, fortunately you can set fine focus adjust for the specific lens. I have a 28-75 f2.8 which, after adjustment turns the 50d into a great studio training camera.
 
I had something similar but not to that degree, if it's a uk model you should be able to send in to intro2020 (the uk tamron official importers) to sort out! Not sure if they send the lenses back to Japan etc as it took mine about 6 weeks!
 
The plot thickens. Just using the 50mm 1.8, I decided to run some tests using a chart.

The results are below:

The focus is on the writing (this edge...) and I really not convinced it is acceptable. I have messed around and unless I run it at f9+, it is just naff.

Anybody any thoughts?

PS I know there is a slight bubble in the chart but surely not enough to throw it off 30-40mm.

Compare the same lens on my 500d and it is a different picture (hur hur). 50mm @ 1.8:

I understand that it is real world application that is most important and that if I am looking for errors then I will find them. But surely, the 7d's autofocus is better than the 500d's? If that is not the case then why pay more than twice the price for it?

Just wondering if it is cause for alarm or am I expecting too much? Considering I spent approx. a grand on the body alone, it is a little bit much to just shrug and take it on the chin. Or am I being unreasonable?

Neither seem acceptable to me sorry. I had the 17-50 on Nikon and focus was spot on both on a D40 and on a D7k. Same for my 50-150 Sigma, 10-24 Tamron and 12-24 Nikkor and 35mm 1.8.

Got a Pentax and the first thing I noticed was that my K-5 was a few mm front focusing with the 40mm, micro adjustments sorted that out but I was about to send it back as it was obvious.

If your camera has focus adjustment use it and see how far it has to go before it is corrected, if you can fix it using the adjustment then I'd be tempted to not return anything as that would be an indication that the manufacturer expects these differences. If you cant fix it with adjustments then send it back.

Neither lens *should* front focus by that much. But as the shot's have been taken in low light, try repeating in good light. If they do continue to front focus try micro-adjust

Thanks for the replies. I will have a crack at the micro-adjustment on the 7d. In daylight!

I have only had it for a couple of weeks and mainly done wildlife pics from distance. If I try some portrait at wide apatures I am sure to find out.
