I'm planning on buying a 5D MK III in the next few weeks and had planned to also purchase the Canon 24-70mm L f/2.8 II at the same time... however after reading reviews of both lenses it seems there's not really much between that and the Tamron version.

Has anyone used both and can give me some feedback on the performance differences?

It's just I remember reading similar things when choosing between the 17-55mm canon & 17-50mm Tamron, where eventually I went for the Tamron... however a year later upgraded to the Canon and noticed a huge difference!

Money isn't really an issue here, I just want the best lens as I'll be using it for professional shoots :)

Tamron is getting great reviews IQ being close to Canon and the added bonus of IS. But you get a hit in build quality, and I've seen quite a few reports of seconds lens element falling out of place. Just google it. Lensrentals.com have some info on this
Personally I'm keeping Canon mk1 and will get mk2 when the price is right and I feel like spending big

Thanks for the info :)

I'll read up on the build issues... think all Tamron come with a 5 year warranty though so might still be tempted.
