Hi

I have just been recommended the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 by digital rev for my first zoom lens on a 60d which is within my budget.

Have you got this lens?
What are the pro/cons?
What do you use it for?

Thanks

I had one a couple of years ago, cracking lens for the money, nice and sharp and not bad AF.

Build is OK. The only problem in my experience was the variation in samples. It took me 3 before I had one I was happy with. The others i tried had focus issues.

If it was me I would rather buy from a shop where you can test the lens first. Of course you can return to DR if you're not happy, but with them being HK based it would be a hassle.

But when you do get a good one you will be delighted.

The 17-50/2.8 would make more sense unless you're specifically looking for reach.
They have actually suggested both lenses but I was quite happy to spend the little bit extra.
I am open to suggestions and best options.

They're both good lenses, but if you want to take wide angle shots then the 28-75/2.8 may disappoint you on a crop sensor camera like the 60D. It's great on my full frame 6D though, where 28mm gives you a much wider field of view :)

You have a crop body (DX), the sensible choice would be the 17-50, which is designed to replicate the field of view of the 28-75 on a full frame camera.

I have the 28-75 and use it on my full frame camera as a standard zoom, on a crop body camera I find that it isn't really wide enough.

For what type of photography do you (would you) use each lens?

I am mainly interested by portrait.

Basically the same but if you're only going to shoot portraits then maybe the 28-75 would be better for you - wide angle isn't particularly flattering for that.
