taps & dies for lens mounts?

1/4" UNC is always 20 TPI. So you just want a 1/4 UNC tap/die. Any decent dedicated tool shop will sell them - I tend to get mine from Bristol Tools on Gloucseter Road when I need them, which is fine for people who live in Bristol but perhaps not anyone else!

You want High Speed Steel (HSS) which will last longer than "high carbon steel". You will also (obviously) need a tap wrench and a die stock.

All of these items can also be found on evilbay.
 
HSS will last longer, but often considerably more expensive. If its for one particular project, there is an argument for buying the cheapest sort to do the job. If you're doing it frequently, then that is another matter.
 
see if you have a cromwell near you they do most things and if not can source it from somewhere else, use them all the time to buy tools :).
 
I thought tripod mounts were BSW, not UNC?

Not that there's much difference...
