My daughter handed me her laptop. It's not performing well at all. I reloaded Windoes XP using the oem disc. But the computer doesn't shut down. So I press Ctrl>Alt>Del and it tells me the task manager is disabled. How do I re-enable it? Not saying this is the problem, she admitted to me she dropped the bloody thing and a constant clicking noise is apparent when in use.

Of course I will be putting it in the repair shop soon, but just want to see if I can get it running a little better in the meantime.

Any help, I'll be grateful.

Could it be a virus/trojan? One of the first things they do is disable the taskmanager to prevent you stopping the offending program.

Download and run malwarebytes first.

Then to re-enable Task Manager, you'll need the second part of this page

Thanks guys. Will try tomorrow now. (Had a couple of Gold LaBELS ;-) )

Clicking noise could be a damaged cooling fan or a hard disk close to failure due to the drop.

That's my thoughts, does get a bit warm in places too. :(

...I know most laptops do get warm, thats not a sign of failure of the fan itself, mainly the airflow being blocked. The laptop may poweroff immediately if there is some form of temperature management on the motherboard if things get too hot.

The hard disk may also fail, so take a little backup of any data you want to keep safe.

There wont be any other reason, other than the fan or disk causing the clicking sound.

Thanks Andy, Tony and Jim. Appreciate all your advice.
