For a long time now I have been looking into getting a teleconverter. I shoot lots of football and a wide range of other sports. The teleconverter would be for outdoor use only. I currently have a Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D and a 300mm f2.8.

Recently I have been seeking that extra bit of reach. However I don't have the money for a 400mm f2.8. The teleconverter would be needed for both lenses but I also don't have the money to upgrade to a 70-200 f2.8 or really the need as the 80-200mm does a great job with regards to sharpness and image quality.

I'm interested in the 1.4x but I'm not sure on the speed of the auto focus and the reduction in quality. Has anyone used a 1.4x with one of the lenses and could give me any advice.

Get a 1.4x, its a real no brainer when you have a 300 2.8.

AF slows slightly, but really EVERSO slightly and the 300 2.8 is like lightning anyway, so no problems for anything I shoot (and I shoot the fastest motorsport!).

Do it!

The Kenko Pro 1.4x is as good optically as the Nikon version but build is a bit worse and the bloody end caps keep falling off in your pocket. About half the price though.
 
I believe the Nikon teleconverters won't work with the AF-D. My 300 is a AF-S so that is no problem. Ideally I would want a TC for both lenses. Is the Kenko worth it? I know it is a cheap investment in comparison, but placing a £100 TC on a £3000+ prime a good idea? The extra 1.4x for both lenses with be great and the extra stop wouldn't make too much difference, but I don't want to lose IQ and AF if I can help it.
 
The Kenko works just fine on a Nikon 300 2.8
