Does anyone have experience of using the 2x converter with this prime, and if so, any good?

I've been watching a Red Backed Shrike today but didn't even bother trying to get a shot due to the distance involved.

I use this lens with the 1.4TC and 1.7TC ... with great results, I would not even consider using it with a 2.0TC

With 1.7TC ISO3200

 
John I used it with the 1.4 and occasionally with the 1.7 - I think you might lose AF with the 2X
 
Cheers Andrew. That was one of my main concerns. There are plenty of reports of this with the mkII TC's but not as much with regard to the mkIII.
 
You'll stick keep AF with the 2x on a D300.

The results probably won't be too pretty though.

I use a Kenko 1.4x and a Nikon 1.7x with that lens and those are both fine on most occassions.

I think I have convinced myself to go for the Nikon 1.7x

Same combination I use.
 
Superb set Sam. The detail on the close-ups is amazing.
Brings back great memories of our visit to Kenya.
