whats the best tc to get for my nikon 70-200mm 2.8
is it the i.7 or the 2.0 ??

any pro's and cons ?

I think you can use any of them: quote from Nikon "The 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR supports the TC-14EII, TC-17E II, TC-20EII".

But which is best? I'd say, stick with the TC-14EII or, if you feel you need it, the TC-17E II...skip the TC-20EII but you might try the TC-20EIII if your body can cope with autofocusing at higher f numbers.

As for pros and cons; they will almost certainly soften your shots, autofocusing will probably be slower (if it works at all), you lose a stop or more of exposure...you'll get a 420 mm equivalent focal length on a DX body (TC-14).

The optimum solution might be to borrow one (or another) and try it out first.

Glad you asked this, read a review that the 1.7 doesn't have much effect on IQ, but the 2.0x does start to soften it a bit. But that was an older review and no idea how credible it was. maybe the newer 2.0x tc is better.
I am going from a 70-300 to the 70-200 and think I will miss the extra reach.

having just bought a d700 fx i am missing the extra reach with the dx camera so i want to buy a tc.

I don't own a 1.7 but I do have a 1.4II and 2.0III. The 1.4 makes AF a bit slower but not massively IQ is pretty unchanged. The 2.0 can make AF diabolical in some circumstances, usually once the light is poor, but even in good light it's slower than the 1.4. I believe the 1.7 is somewhere in the middle as you'd expect. IQ wise I try to stop down to f8 with the 2x on but 5.6 can produce a good shot (in my option I've seen people write off any TC due to the loss).

This is on a 300 2.8 not a 70-200 but basic principles would apply as they are both 2.8 lenses.

I have the 1.4 and the 1.7 tc,used them both on the 70-200,impact on IQ is minimal in my opinion.

I`ll try and find some pics from them both.

I have the 1.7 which I have used on my 70-200 f2.8 VR2 and now I use on my 70-200 f4. Image quality is very acceptable. I have decided to go for it over the 1.4 for the extra reach and over the 2.0 for the extra light. It works well for my needs

Sorry for the hi-jack,

Has anyone gone from the 70-300mm VR to the 70-200VR with a 1.7TC? How would they compare at 300mm?

I had the 70-200 VRII and 1.7x not long back. Found that combination ok . . . I wished I had got the 1.4 though, as I did find the output a little washy. May just be me.

Now I have the 300mm f4 and use it with the 1.4x, lovely combination. Just as fast with or without on that lens. And I se no significant drop in quality. I would suggest the 1.4x, otherwise you need a longer reach lens.

Cheers both, and great pictures Gary. Will see how it goes for a couple of weeks, then decide if I can cope without one or not.
