I ordering the the Nikon AF-S 300mm F4 lens this weeks, can anyone please advise on any IQ problems when using Nikon TCs?

Not sure which one to go for really, bird photography mainly, so it's a compromise of reach versus drop in IQ.

1.4 or 1.7 I use these on my 300 F4 but wouldn't want the old 2x.

The new one is supposed to work on it but at almost twice the price is not for me, well not until I see some results from it

According to what Nikon say, Mark, the new 2X TC will work with the 300mm f4 Nikkor, but without autofocus.
Think I'd like to see quite a lot of results from the new 2X before forking out money.
Image quality with TC's has traditionally fallen off as magnification increases.

Thanks for the help.

Works fine with the Nikon or Kenko Pro 1.4x or the Nikon 1.7x.

I believe it works with the Nikon 2x but the IQ will be blurgh.

The 1.4 and 1.7 work perfectly well with the 300 AF S on my D300, still sharp wide open, and AF's with either, although can hunt a bit with the 1.7 on.

Best to be using single central point focus, to give it a chance.

300 + 1.7 ISO 3200 both at f7.1

Just found the 2x MKIII TC, anyone any experience of that?

Way more pricey than the MKII versions, roughly £450 compared to £300.

Latest version, only been out a few months, doubt there are any in the UK, supposed to be very good

Would not suggest you got one for your f4, would become an f8 and I doubt AF would work, stick to the 1.4 or 1.7 on that lens

Thanks for all the help.

I'm in the same situation, having just bought this lens from a seller on here!

Its a toss up between the 1.4x or the 1.7x. No worries about getting the 1.4x, but that bit extra with the 1.7x would be useful and I'm just worried how much of a hit the AF speed takes with it as I'll be shooting high speed moving objects (rally cars and jets) with it!

Cheers,

Well, I've shot Superbikes and A1GP with the 1.7x on this... no problem until dusk comes along...
