teathering

All I've ever done is plugged the camera into the computer and clicked on "tethered capture" under the file menu.

all I seem to get when I've connected my canon 550 is the eos utility offering me a failure to communicate message and if I press the shutter button a busy message....and thats it

My nikon came with a trial software which I belive could do tethering. You could also control the camera from the computer using it.

I have now plugged my camera in via usb and clicked tethered shooting and it works.

In the communications set up in the camera menu ( If there is that option) ensure it's set to PC not to PICT. That may be the problem

I'm using a Canon 550 and having looked at tha manual there doesnt appear to be this option...I'm probably missing something really basic but just at the moment I'm stumped :bonk:

Make sure you are saving to an empty folder. If you have images already in the folder tethering doesn't work.

When I connect my 550D I set everthing up as in the tutorial and then it detects the camera is there but it displays no settings for shutter speed etc and I cant shoot with it.

What am I doing wrong??? it works ok with EOS Utility but I would rather use Lightroom.

Never had that problem. Are you running the latest version of Lightroom. The latest is 3.4.1 . If not try updating, not sure if that will cure the problem but it's worth a try.

As it works with the EOS utility you could set up Lightroom to "Watch" the folder you are using the EOS utility to save the files too. You need to enable " Auto Import" ( It's under the FILE dialogue ). Not elegant but may solve the problem in the short term
