Tele-Converter or No Tele-Converter?

The simple asnswer is they're as good as the lens you stick them behind. They all have an effect on IQ, but it depends on the lens how noticeable or sometimes even negligible it is.

Generally speaking they're best not used with zoom lenses as you'll see the biggest drop in IQ. Used with a top end prime they can be very very good indeed with hardly any perceptible drop in IQ. If you already have the quality prime lens it wouild make a lot of sense, but if not you might be disappointed.
 
Are the lenses in your profile the ones you will be putting a teleconvertor on?

If so then I expect you will not get amazing results and more importantly (especially with the lower winter light now) you will likely have autofocus issues.
 
I have used a 1.4 teleconverter with my 300mmf4 Nikon prime lens and I dont see any loss in image quality. However, I have also used it with my 70-200 f2.8 zoom and I feel it is noticeable. merv:nikon:
 
If you are talking about the current TC-14E, TC-17E or TC-20E II teleconverters, they will not fit onto your 55-200.

Not worth it with your current lensine up plus they will not fit them anyway. You need fast glass befire you can consider adding a tc to them otherwise you lose autofocus and the quality of the shots you get will be poor due to the lose of IQ.
