Tele Converter Vs 500mm

Hi I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to go. I see Tele Converters for rather a lot of money on eBay and was wondering would I be better getting a good quality 2x TC or say a Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO There is some difference in the price but if I could get away with a TC it would be a fair bit cheaper.

If the TC was passable I already have a Sigma 70-300 APO but i could use the TC with other lenses and I wonder what sort of IQ I could expect from the 70-300 coupled with the TC compared to the 500mm If anyone has any experience of both I would be grateful for some information.

I used a 2x with a Sigma 70-200 2.8 and the combo was pretty poor. The 1.4x works alot better with both my Sigma's. I don't think your lens was designed to take a tc, even if one would fit the results would be dire.

Agreed, on both counts. The sigma x2 does not get the best reviews, the 1.4 is the preferred option for many from what I have seen plus not sure the 70-300 can take a TC anyway :( TBH, might be better to stay at a shorter length and crop afterwards, as the IQ drain would be significant.
 
They go for serious money too. Well serious to me. I presumed for the price they would be great quality. Just shows a question can save you a lot of grief in the long run. Thanks for all the quick replies :thumbs:
