Mornin' all,

I have a little query for the tech-heads... I use a Canon 2xMKIII converter with my 300mm f/2.8 on my 5DMKIII quite frequently with no issues whatsoever but when I go to use a Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DGX, it won't work at all. :shrug:

When I go to use the same converter and lens on any other Canon body, it works just fine! I've tried them on a 7D, 60D, 650D and a 1000D without any issues but it just locks up on the 5DMKIII. :thinking:

Any ideas?

i was reading somewhere(i think canon rumors about problems with tc's and canons micro adjust .try disabling it with the micro adjusted lens still on ,fire a shot or two off (for some reason taking a shot is needed )then removing the lens and replacing with the tc and 300mm .worth a try maybe

None of my lenses are micro-adjusted so I don't think that'll have any bearing on the result. Since the 7D has the same MA feature, arguably it wouldn't work on there either if the issue was with that. My guess is that the issue lies somewhere within the 5DMKIII's brain... In theory, if it works on everything else (including the 650D which is a newer camera), it should work on the 5DMKIII. :thinking:

I suppose the answer is quite straightforward... Use a Canon 1.4x TC and the issue won't (and doesn't) arise! :)

definitely mate ,
maybe the new firmware due in april (the f8 focusing)will do something ,who knows!!
 
I've tried it both ways Laurence and it doesn't make any difference. :shrug:
 
My kenko 1.4x DGX works fine 5DIII on every lens apart from from my 300 2.8, it doesn't recognise that it is there and hunts. It does eventually focus, but it will let me select 2.8 as the aperture. I think that's why it struggles to focus.
 
I've just tried my Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x on my 5D3 and put a few of my lenses on and had no problems at all. The camera reports the length and aperture correctly and it shoots with all my lenses I tried.

I haven't got a 300mm f/2.8 to try but I did it on a Sigma 24-70 f2.8, a Sigma 150-500 OS (although I lost AF), a Canon 24-105 f4L, 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII and a 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8. I hope you find out what the problem is with your 300. I'll see if I can get to my mates and try his 400 f5.6 but that's the closest I can get.

sell it to me and buy a canon MKIII converter:D

Simon,

Try disabling the AFMA on the 5D3 whilst another lens is mounted. Take a shot after disabling and then change to your 300/2.8 & 1.4 DGX combo.

Bet it works now ;)

I did read them but Simon doesn't appeared to have tried it as he stated that his lenses weren't AFMA'd. It's not the AFMA value that causes the problem, it's that the facility is enabled.

Hi Bob,

The AFMA is enabled but not used so I can see where you're coming from... The Kenko converter isn't mine but I'll try and pinch it later to see if your suggestion works. :)
