teleconverter query

I am looking to add a teleconverter to my kit now I have the Nikon 80-200. My first thought is to go for a Nikon tc - but I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with cheaper options. Thanks

Is the 80-200mm the AF-S one or just the AF-D one, as I dont think the converters work with the AF-D ones just the AF-S lenses?!

I have the 80-200 AF-S version and use the kenko pro300 2x converter (bought from ebay second hand £50). It works perfectly, AF works fine but you lose 2 stops i think thats with all 2x converters.

Ah ... it is the D lens. Anyone know if they work with converters???
