sitting in a hide today i mentioned i was after a TC for my 300mm f4 L and a lad said here .. try this.

A jessops 2x TC. So i popped it on and had aplay around with it.

On the camera it still showed f4 and i was getting the same shutter speeds as i was before i put it on, still exposing correctly too. Does that sound odd to anyone?

I Never saved any of the photos to see what the IQ was like using the 2x :bonk:


£80 for a stop gap TC until i can afford the canon 1.4x might not be too bad.
 
I'll see if i can get some saved and see what the IQ is actualy like!

Canon 1.4 is too much atm! Another one i've been looking at is a kenko 1.5x which I know has been used on the lens before but i've never seen any results from using it!

The Canon 2x works beautifully with my 300 2.8! It'd give you 600mm f8 though so wouldn't focus on anything but a 1D!

That's not possible. If you use a 2x TC, you lose two stops. Shutter speed will change to compensate.

The one to go for is the 1.4x Kenko Teleplus Pro 300. It's the best one going apart from the camera makers' own, and is pretty much as good with most lenses. It fits more lenses, too, because the front element doesn't stick out.

300 2.8 becomes 600 5.6 with a 2x TC, so it will AF on any camera body.
 
The info on the camera showed the same shutter speeds and before someone explained it wasn't communicating I knew no different! Shame I never saved any to show!

I have the f4 version which I assume purpleclouds means! Il look at the kenko 1.4 you have suggested and see what sort of love they go for! Thanks!

Whether it was communicating or not, the light falling on the sensor must be reduced by 2 stops. If the exposure didn't change, then either you were locked on manual, or the sun came out ;)

I am very happy with Canon 1.4x mk1. They are identical to mk2 apart from weather sealing, and go cheaper on ebay.

The only trouble with converters is magnification of lens flaws. 70-200mm f/4L @ 200mm + 1.4x is not a perfect combination, as it is not perfect on its own (CA increases exactly 1.4x)!. Use it at 170mm + 1.4x and it is near perfect. With your prime not much could go wrong, maybe even with 2x
 
Cheers for the response guys! I think I'll go for the 2x eventualy as it would only be used on the prime!
 
As you are shooting wildlife, I assume you're predominantly using manual focusing rather than autofocus, so losing autofocus at f5.6 probably doesn't matter to you or that focus speed is significantly reduced. (300mm f4 + 2x TC will lose 2 f-stops of light becomes a 300mm f8).

But apart from the lose of 2 f-stops of light and autofocus speeds, loss of image quality is also factored in when using the 2x TC, you lose detail in the image.

I've taken some great images with the 300mm f4 or 300mm f2.8 and 1.4x TC with not obvious loss of image quality, but did take a hit on autofocus speeds and the 300mm f4 doesn't work overly well with the TC in failing light, but it does depends what subjects your shooting and camera settings you require.
