Teleconverter question

Hi All,
Has anyone ever tried this combination, (Nikon D5000)
Nikon AF-S TC-20E III Teleconverter/Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR

If so is it any good? I'm looking for 400mm and have access to the above. However it's for sport/action so will need to focus pretty quickly and have VR.

Any other ways of getting 400mm ish without megga expensive Nikon lens but having quick AFS and VR.

But you'll lose 2 stops of light, transforming your lovely fast glass into a kit zoom (slight exaggeration...)

But it'll be a lot cheaper than buying a dedicated 400mm lens. I guess it depends on the light conditions you'll be working in and what sacrifices you're prepared to put up with to avoid having to sell a kidney. And that's a decision only you can make, so perhaps you should see if you can borrow/rent a TC and see if you're satisified with the results?

It'll work no problem. The Mk3 extender is very good indeed. Quite a few on here use it with the 70-200 and are very pleased with image quality. kevshore even got shot of his 200-400 in favour of the lens/extender combo.

How do you get these shots... Do you fly next to these or something or is it just through lenses & tc's (and some bloody high boxes ) :shrug:

Yeah.
But the two images show that the 2 x converter works well. The first one with the 70-200mm and the second with the 300mm.
If you ever get up this way, I can show you where to shoot from.

Where's "up this way" Kev ....

Anychance of trying out that TC-20E III as well Already have the VRII so wouldn't need yours thou
