Hi Folks
Can you tell me if a TC 20E III teleconverter will accept a Nikon 70-300 f4.5/5.6 G VR lens? I can't get it to attach and maybe it's not meant to
ALSO
I can't get the Grey cover off the end of the converter where the lens attaches. Any ideas?

The 70 300mm VR Nikon zoom does not work with TC20Elll or the others

The grey cover on the TC's is not exactly the same as the black "lens" covers - they look the same but they are not - only the grey one will fit the TC's and it only fits in one position and in can be slightly tricky
It should however come off reasonably easily if it is the cover that states teleconverter
 
Teleconverters are meant for fast aperture lens, ie f2.8 and f4 lenses. Nikon have designed some of their lens so a Teleconverter are not able to fit them. If you did manage to get a 2x Teleconverter to fit your 70-300 you would be at f11 which wouldn't be that useful. A 2x Teleconverter loses 2 stops of light ie f2.8 to f5.6 and a 1.4 Teleconverter loses 1 stop of light ie f2.8 to f4 or f4 to f5.6. Teleconverters are sharper if you stop down by 1/2 to 1 stop.

I seem to remember someone on here mentioning a kenko 1.4 TC may fit on a 70-300 but you would be at f8 if it did.

I have had the problem where the grey cap get stuck, it was due to it not being lined up properly when it was put on. It took a few minutes of gentle persuasion before it came off.
 
even with the 70 200mm f2.8VR the TC lll and TC ll are not that good - IQ apart from AF
The 14 ll works great on the 300mm f4 and the 20 lll on the 300mm f2.8VR

always consult the compatibility chart - possible lens damage as well as poor performance

Great shame if you bought a 20 lll to go with you 70 300mm F4.5/f5.6 VR are the TC is really good used as Nikon intended
 
I believe you can get it to fit but you need to file down or cut off at little lug off the lens

You'll also need to be careful that the rear lenses don't touch each other
 
Matt (and OP), the problem with trying to fit a telecon behind the 70-300 Nikkor is that the rear element of the lens makes contact with the front element of the telecon. The lens can be fitted onto some of the Kenko converters but image quality suffers considerably. If you read the manuals of the 70-300 or the teleconverters, it states the incompatibility clearly.

Yes its called shaving the TC but as stated the elements could touch if you fit it.
 
Thanks guys thats all very useful. I understand that about losing stops. Will try carefully to ease the grey cap off but didn't want to force it.
I certainly won't be shaving anything except my chin!
As usual if I had read the instructions I might have found the answer!
I bought the TC 20 III converter to use with my 300/2.8 prime and it was superb quality. Used if for airshhows and it was great. Traded it in for a 200-400 now. Wonder will it work with the 20 III?
Anyhow glad nothing wrong with my kit so thanks for the advice
