hi all.

I have just got a N-AFs 2x teleplus MC7 teleconverter to use with my D5000, but when I use it I see a ? mark and f-- in the viewfinder.
what does this mean?

I'm guessing (no expert here) that the camera can no longer grab the info from the lens so your now limited to manual mode...

Depends what lens you're using, but add a 2x TC and you lose 2 f-stops of light so a f2.8 lens become a f5.6, an f4 lens becomes f8

....., f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16 are true f-stops, the ones in between like f6.3, f7.1 are 1/3 or 1/2 stops

With canon camera bodies it's simple. Only the 1D series will autofocus above f5.6 (central focus point upto f8), but with nikon (don't own one), I've been told mixed reports of whether autofocus is still available, but as with previous comments, it sounds like you've lost autofocus with that lens and will only be able to manual focus your lens.
 
Did you try putting the teleconverter on the lens FIRST and then attach the lens/teleconverter combo on the camera?

A friend had a similar problem when attaching the teleconverter on the camera body first and then adding the lens.
