I'm regularly finding I need a longer lens. But don't have £700+ to buy a sigma 150-500 just yet.

Currently using the Canon 70-300 IS USM.

Would anyone recommend 2X AF Teleconverter for Canon EOS from eBay?

It's around £75 delivered.

I don't expect to get perfect results, but even a slightly less quality image would allow me to get some better shots of our local birds & wildlife.

A cheap 2x telecon sounds horrendous. Even a very good one will be naff on that lens, and you'll lose autofocus ability.

There is no cheap shortcut to really long lenses. Every 100mm above 300 costs about £1k.

If its a canon TC, then it won't work, only on the L series lenses, but at that price I assume (hopefully) it's something like a sigma or kenko TC, as there the only 2 3rd party TC worth their salt. However the 70-300mm probably does take a TC, maybe the kenko one, but I wouldn't recommend either the 2x or 1.4x TC for this lens. The lens is already f5.6 @ 300mm, a 1.4x TC would make it xx-420mm f8 and 2x TC would make it a xx-600mm f11 and manual focus for both

You lose 1 f-stop of light for the 1.4x TC and 2 f-stops for the 2x TC. Only the 1D series bodies will autofocus (upto f8, centre point), all the other bodies will only autofocus upto f5.6 With the 2x TC you also lose some image quality.

Personally, don't waste your money and add it to your lens pot
