teleconverters v extension tubes

ok so whats the difference, ?? are extension tubes just for close up macro work?

extension tubes don't contain glass and are used for macro work

teleconverters contain glass and are generally used for distance work.

extension tubes allow you to focus closer by moving the lens further from the sensor - but you can then no longer focus on infinity. ideal for ultra close-up work

teleconvertors increase the focal length of the lens (1.4x or 2x generally) and decrease the maximum stop by the same amount, so make a telephoto lens more tele to bring the subject closer

so I was on the right track . what would happen if you used tubes on a long zoom then? and converters on a macro lens?

I do use tubes on a zoom sometimes
same answer allows you to focus closer

convertors - you have to be careful as the front glass is close to if not in front of the fitting
if the glass of the main lens moves back during focus or zoom you get a very interesting but expensive noise!!!

Bird shooters often use a short tube on a long lens to reduce the min. focus distance.
