Teleconverters

I am going to be going to Croatia very soon, and I want to equip myself quite well. I know, that we will probably be looking out for dolphins (saw a fair few last year), but I did not manage to get a good photo. I have a zoom lens EF-S 55mm-250mm IS.

Now, I am thinking about buying a teleconverter for this.
1. What are your suggestions? (I know that I cannot go for a Canon one),
2. Maybe Kenko?? And if Kenko, then should I get x1.4 or x2.0?
3. Does it reduce the quality that much?
4. How much light do I loose?

Please help me out on this one - I would be very grateful.

A 1.4x kenko would be your best bet, 2x are best used with decent primes imo
The Kenko 1.4x is excellent IQ especially for the money
A 1.4x loses 1 stop and a 2x loses 2 stops

Thanks a lot for these. They look ok. I mean, the AF on my 55-250mm is already not brilliant - would it be slowed down much? I mean, It would need to be fairly fast for the dolphins. It should be decent in full light though shouldn't it?

Hello Bartosz :)

I've got the EF-S 55mm-250mm IS and the Kenco 1.4X convertor.

The Kenco 1.4X convertor does'nt fit on any of my EF lenses.

They have an extension to the camera end that gets in the way.

Oh, thats really interesting Anthony. I would have thought that it would fit the EF and not the EF-S??? Weird. Oh well, I am having second thoughts on this. I am not sure whether I can afford £100 odd for a teleconverter. I am not sure whether this is justified. I am just worried, that it is not really worth it.

If you have used this combination - Does it decrease AF speed that much?

And you'd have been right to think that. There are no TCs that will fit EF-S lenses. Even if there was one that fits, it wouldn't just slow down AF - it would disable it completely.

I have a Kenko 1.4 Pro 300DG and it fits all my EF lens's. I don't think you will be impressed with the IQ on your lens (if it fits) and I'm not sure if it would AF at the long end.

If i were you I'd try before you buying

From WEX Please note: Kenko teleconverters are not compatible with Canon EF-S lenses.
