A bit of help and explanation please.

Iam currently thinking of buying a TC but are they all compatable with each other ie between makes. Body Nikon D90 lenses at the moment will be used mainly on my Nikon 70-300 AF-SVF11ED but don't want to limit myself in future. Also will mixing say a Kenko or Sigma TC with Nikon lens retain all functions.

Nikon TC's will only work on certain Nikon lenses usually the top end lenses...

A Sigma TC depending on which fit - will only work with a Nikon fit Sigma lens or a Canon fit Sigma lens or a Sigma lens (for a Sigma camera) it wont WORK on a Nikon or Canon lens...

The kenko will work on what ever fit it is ie Nikon, Canon fit....

I'd imagine that if any of thats wrong then it will be corrected....

Nikon don't recommend using a TC with the 70-300 lens, because the image would degrade to an extent which they consider unacceptable (but you might not).

Nikon and Sigma TCs won't fit that lens. A Kenko TC would fit it.

I used to use both a Sigma 1.4x EX and a 2x EX on my Canon 70-200mm. It will work on any lens that the Canon converter will work on as it is built in much the same way.

Yes, but the same doesn't hold true in Nikon-land.

Thanks for clearing that up - useful to know.

Although I was replying more to Steve who had catagorically stated they won't work on both Nikon and Canon.

For which I CATAGORICALLY stated as you so say - if any of thats wrong then it will be corrected.....

I have a Kenko 1.4x TC which I use on my D90 and D40 bodies. It works with all my lenses but doesn't always tell the camera it's fitted (i.e. when used with the Nikon 70-300 the EXIF shows the focal length as set in the lens not that x1.4) - depends on te lens.

You lose 1 stop when using it but I've never had a problem with AF.

I have to say that the IQ with the TC attached is pretty damned good - at least good enough for me anyway :)

There's a general rule here which might be worth noting. Observations made with one camera system - especially in connection with accessories, third-party compatibility, etc - may not translate over to another.

I have a recent model Kenko Pro 300 1.4 with D90
I also have 70-300vR, it works with it BUT quality and AF are not so good
Works great with my 300 F4 with no loss of IQ as far as I can see
