I have been commissioned for some sports photography but ideally I could do with some extra reach on my lens. Can't afford to go out and buy a new lens so my next option is to buy a teleconverter. This will be used on my beloved Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF-D.

I would like to get it near to 300mm and obviously to keep AF and the optical quality. I hear Nikon teleconverters don't offer the AF capabilities.

Any suggestions would be great. Have heard some things about Kenko.
 
Did a search on this earlier this evening on a TC-17II. I think youll find that this and the 20 all keep AF and VR with quite a few lens'. There is also a 20III out as well although not sure what it offers over the 20II
 
Thanks for that. I really need to consider how it will effect my camera during night shooting. I need to keep it as close to f2.8 as possible. Don't want to pump the ISO sky high to compensate.
 
That link doesn't seem to work, Mouldy. Also, DeeJay I am looking to buy as these will be a long-term commission.

Ideally I would like some suggestions of what people may do in my situation. I have very little knowledge on teleconverters.

I'm quite interested in the Kenko Teleplus AF 1.4x - how would this suit my lens? It is needed for morning and night sports (night being under poor floodlighting).

Obviously putting any x1.4 TC onto your 80-200 f2.8 will give you a 112-280 f4.

Also, typically, putting a x1.4 TC onto a lens will degrade the image by 10%+ (in terms of resolvable lines per unit width) and AF speed by 10%+ These last two figures will actually be determined by the make of TC you get.

In short though, I find Kenko pro 300s to be fairly good and are reasonably priced so if you can live with the f4 then these are worth a look.
 
If you used a cropped Nikon camera rather than full frame for the shoot, with a 1.4 TC you would add the extra x 1.5 and have effectively a 168-420 at f4? I think.

Thanks guys for clarifying that with me. I really need to ensure that image quality and auto focus work at their maximum. Unfortunately my client demands will be high so I'm a little unsure whether a teleconverter will suffice enough.

May have to dig deep and look for a new lens :o
