I have a Nikon D90 body and one of my lenses is a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 mkII and i am thinking of buying a teleconverter to get closer with minimal loss in quality etc...

What is the best available in the 1.5x range.

I don't think a teleconverter will allow you to focus any closer, for this I would go for extension tubes where there will be no loss of image quality as no extra glass is involved.
 
I take it you are looking to extend your focal length and you are not talking about macro photography. If so, I believe Nikon do 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 extenders and a hunt around these forums should inform you as to the quality of each.

I think he meant get closer to the subject.

Nikon do 1.4 and 1.7 Converters, both of which get good praise
 
Sorry, i should have mentioned that i want to zoom in closer so less cropping is required in any post processing. I understand that fitting a Sigma 1.4x converter would give me 280mm f4.
I had thought about selling the lens on and getting a Nikkor 70-300 VR but would lose a few f stops in doing so but would this really make a big difference.
 
Sorry, I read the original post wrong. I use a Kenko 1.4 300 Pro teleconverter with my 70-200 f2.8 with very good results.
 
I have a Sigma 1.4 which I use with my Sigma 150-500 and it's OK

Kenko and Sigma are the ones to consider. They're both just under the £200 mark so nothing to choose there. I expect the Sigma converter would be a better match to the Sigma lens and I've put my money where my mouth is by buying one to go with my 50-150mm f2.8.

Nikon's teleconverters are better quality (and much higher price!) but won't mount non-Nikon lenses or even Nikon lenses that aren't AF-S or AF-I (according to the compatibility chart on Nikonians).

So the Nikon TC is a non starter and the Sigma is limited to Sigma. I have the Kenko 300 telepro and it works with any lens bar those that will not physically fit (rear element too far back?)
It only transmits (does not correct) EXIF data not that that bothers me.
